Computed Tomography (CT)

CT Explained: CT scans are a state-of-the-art diagnostic solution, utilising X-rays to produce a sequence of cross-sectional images, offering detailed insights into internal structures for accurate medical assessments. With a history of widespread use since the 1970s, CT scans have become indispensable in diagnosing a spectrum of illnesses and injuries. While acknowledging the minimal risks associated with X-ray exposure, it's beneficial to recognise that a CT scan typically imparts radiation levels equivalent to three years of natural environmental exposure. Therefore the advantages of undergoing a CT scan surpass any associated minimal risks.

Important information we need to know: Prior to your CT scan, it's crucial to inform us if you:

• Take metformin for diabetes
• Have any allergies or asthma
• Experience impaired kidney function
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Prior to your arrival:

• We ensure the suitability of your CT scan by gathering essential information during booking and requiring completion of a questionnaire before your appointment.
• For comfort, wear loose clothing and leave jewellery at home if possible.
• Please confirm your appointment by phone 24 hours in advance and arrive promptly.
• Inform us of any disabilities for optimal service.
• While you're welcome to bring a companion, they typically can't join you in the examination room for safety reasons.
• Remember to bring your appointment email confirmation with you.

Scan preparation:

• If you have selected either the Enhanced or Elite Package, and after your MRI scan, a member of the radiography team will explain the procedure, and ask you to sign a consent form and complete a safety questionnaire. You'll have the chance to address any queries about the scanning process.
• You may be requested to change into a hospital gown, and we'll provide a secure place for your personal belongings.
• Throughout the procedure, the radiography team will oversee your care, explaining each step and being attentive to any discomfort you may experience.

During your scan:

• The radiographer operating the scanner will maintain visual and auditory contact with you throughout the procedure.
• You'll be asked to recline on the scanner bed, ensuring your comfort to minimise movement. Occasionally, you may be requested to hold your breath or refrain from swallowing while images are being taken.
• Typically, CT scan sessions take between 10 to 15 minutes.
• While you're welcome to bring a companion, they're usually not permitted in the examination room for safety reasons.

After your scan:

• There are no restrictions on your usual activities following the scan. You may resume eating and drinking as usual, drive, and return to work immediately afterward.
• Our consultant radiologist will review the images after your CT scan and provide a written report normally within a few days.
